Obituary for Mrs. Valery Alison Chambers

Mrs. Valery Alison Chambers
Valery Alison Chambers (nee Gower) passed away St Joseph’s Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario on Wednesday July 19, 2017 surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren. She was 85 years of age.

Val was born in Malta, and she was already a world traveler when she came to Canada at age 18. She was a member of the Silver Heels Track Club, and was working as a legal secretary when she met then married Selwyn. She and Selwyn lived in Weston, Ontario, until they moved to Thunder Bay in 1970. Smart, loving, and supportive, she embodied proper English ways, which was a challenge when she was blessed with four spirited children. She was the center of family life, always willing to lend an ear and entertain with stories she made up. Her soothing voice sent many a child to sleep. She fed armies of children, baked legendary pies and birthday cakes, tended to gardens, pets and horses, while raising "free range" children and grandchildren, shaping not only their lives but also the lives of their friends.

She was an avid golfer and member of the Fort William Country Club. She enjoyed winters in Florida, golfing and walking the beach while Selwyn fished. Val was the heart of our family and we will always remember her as a kind and patient soul.

Val is survived by her husband of 60 years, Selwyn; her children Paul (Theresa), Carol (Jeff Monas), Ian (Alissa), and Bruce (Lori Reynolds); and her grandchildren Chelsea (Skip), Karli Bender, Daniel Chambers, Zach Monas, Lyndsey Monas, Caralynn Chambers and Lucas Chambers; great grandchildren Jesse and Hudson.

A Celebration of Val’s Life will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at the Fort William Country Club (1350 Mountain Road) from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers a donation to the Thunder Bay Shelter House in Val's memory would be appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James.
